This summer, SAM will present an exhibition called Infinity Mirrors, showcasing works by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. The works in the exhibition span five decades and date back to the original Infinity Mirror Room, completed in 1965. This room is filled with spotted white tubers and lined with mirrors so that the space appears to go on forever. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience this and other Infinity Mirror Rooms, which form the core of the exhibition.
Kusama will also have a variety of paintings and drawings on display, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to see how her various moves and encounters influenced her art. When she moved to New York in the late 1950s, there was a clear shift in her work and subsequent development as an artist. Ultimately, the artist’s move from disrupting installations to ethereal mirror rooms reflects the larger shift toward experiential exhibitions in contemporary art.
